There’s a quiet confidence in Erika Altosaar’s art that’s almost inexplicable. The soft lines and gentle feel of her sketches and paintings depict complex subjects that she tackles through her work. Her exploration of what it means to be a woman in the visual arts world has her toying with the ideas of motherhood and sexuality. Although there’s a soft feminine touch to her work, her voice in the online community is strong. Altosaar runs her own personal blog, Tumblr and Twitter, which have helped her gain the strong following she has today. Her life is torn between New York, Montreal and Toronto fostering an evolution in her work that she is constantly refining. Erika Altosaar is a lady divided.
Meredith Gillies: How did you first get into art?
Erika Altosaar: I had a really great art teacher in high school who had me really engaged in making and studying art. I applied to the Studio Arts program at Concordia out of interest and curiosity, but it definitely brought me to the right place.
