Flipping through DJ’s portfolio, it seems like I’m looking at a different girl on each page. Somehow her striking features can transform leaps and bounds with a little hair, makeup and styling. Even when looking at her in person, it’s difficult to get a concrete grasp of what she looks like, a kaleidoscopic vision of long slender limbs and pale blue eyes.

DJ’s personality, however, is anything but assorted. The girl is chirpy, and has no shortage of silly grins or little jokes. She could be seen crip-walking in five inch heels in between shots and striking ridiculous poses, just for a laugh.

It’s no surprise that she was walking in LG Fashion Week just one week after sending pictures to a model placement agency, this past June. She then spent a month in New York, walking in its fashion week. “Being thrown into it and going to New York, and travelling around by myself. That was a reality check for this job; I’ve been loving it. I’ve always been outgoing but you mature quicker when you’re by yourself,” she explains.

A John Collins fan and self-proclaimed art deco addict seems to sum up what this up-and-comer is all about, but in reality, there are many more layers. While steering clear of the norm, the OCAD graduate has made her mark in the tough to crack world of jewelry design. Lavigne’s cutting edge aesthetic hasn’t gone unnoticed, and she has caught the attention of notable bands, highly documented events such as the MMVA’s as well as the pages of Schon Magazine. How has this all come to be and why? Lets find out.

Bronte Martin: Where did it all begin for you as an aspiring jewelry designer?
Alynne Lavigne: I started collecting vintage jewelry five or six years ago and then reselling it through 69 Vintage. Later I started altering and re-constructing vintage pieces, then actually drawing and designing my own stuff. I love vintage jewelry but I couldn’t justify collecting so much of it unless I told myself I would resell it later.

BM: What sets you apart from other Canadian designers?

Stonemasonry is the craft of shaping rough pieces of rock into accurate geometrical shapes, mostly simple, but some of considerable complexity, and then arranging the resulting stones, often with mortar, to form structures.

This exact definition could be applied almost directly to the business model of newly established Toronto design firm Mason and, more importantly, to the puppet-masters behind it. This became vastly apparent when I sat down with the duo responsible to discuss everything this multi-disciplinary design house has to offer.

It’s 10:01am on Monday morning when I arrive at my local coffee joint to meet with Ashley Rumsey and Stanley Sun: “Stan,” affectionately. I notice them almost instantly; they stick-out like design-thumbs amongst a sea of crying babies, sleepy Grandmas eating carrot muffins and an overwhelming selection of Bodums for sale. It might also be that we’ve met before: a month prior, to be exact, to discuss their first ever Show Off street festival hosted in Toronto’s design-centric Junction neighborhood.

As the founder and sole designer of Outclass, Matteo Sgaramella has a strong grip on sophisticated yet functional menswear. Whether it’s a pair of red pants that fit just right or a classic pea coat with magnificent details, gaps in his imaginary wardrobe continue to be filled each and every season. Collection after collection, the OCAD graduate steers clear from producing cookie cutter garments and focuses on standing the test of time in style and durability. As soon as we met, I instantly became aware of the fact that Matteo never leaves his house without advertising his own clothes.

Bronte Martin: What is Outclass?
Matteo Sgaramella: A brand developed to represent things that are missing from Canadian menswear shelves. It was a specific niche that desperately needed to be filled. Outclass caters to men (of any age) who are into heritage and historical aesthetics as well as high-quality clothing with a proper fit. It’s something that is wearable in a professional setting but remains true to our roots by providing an edge. Outclass can be found at Klaxon Howl and The Future of Frances Watson.

While they’ve been getting plenty of love from blogs everywhere and on The Hype Machine charts for their track Can’t Stop alongside remixes of Florence and the Machine’s Take Care and The Weeknd’s Wicked Games, ColeCo want everyone to know that they are more than just DJs. Besides churning out their dance floor-ready interpretations of their favourite songs, the Toronto-based production duo of Duncan Grewar and Sean Koch have been busy making their own original electronic music. With their first EP titled Can’t Stop and debut album on the way, ColeCo are ready to show the world who they really are.

Max Mertens: You both have been involved in the Toronto music scene for quite a few years now. What are some of the most significant differences between when you guys started out DJing and the culture today?
Sean Koch: We had a production company throwing raves in the late ’90s in downtown Toronto at the height of the rave movement. There were some pretty big shows that were happening. We had 15 000 people going to the raves we were playing at the time and then it all kind of changed into club DJs and resident DJs.

An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail. – Edwin Land

After an exceptionally long week spent creating the relaunch in September, we felt it was important to reconsider the balance of our focus in our upcoming issue. To refine the OTMzine brand, we felt we needed to scale back the amount of content in our Winter 2011 issue. Although the issue feels tiny for us, there are still 24 amazing profiles in the many pages you are about to read. From photographers and bands to interior, fashion and graphic designers, each profile has been specifically crafted to best highlight what each artist has to offer. With a few new disciplines added, we seem to have almost every type of creative field covered. This re-balancing has allowed us to spend more time focusing on other aspects of the OTMzine brand such as the blog, social networking, advertising and especially events. As much as we love being an online magazine (or webzine, as we coined ourselves), we are very much looking forward to building our offline community in the streets, at the music venues and galleries of Toronto. After a few successful adjustments in the past few months, we have refined the way we look in each issue to incorporate more interactive events for our readers and now, more than ever, we are certainly not afraid to fail.
